October 16, Dr. Penner

Posted on: Nov 8, 2013

Dr. Myron Penner, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Trinity Western University, will present on October 16 at 16:00 in room HA 015.

Would it be Good for there to be God?

In this talk I will present the contours of a research project funded by the John Templeton Foundation I am working on this year.  I propose to investigate two areas directly relevant to assessing the ‘value impact’ (positive, negative, or neutral) God’s existence would have on a possible world. The first project develops an argument for pro-theism (the view that God’s existence would be, on balance, a good thing and as such it is rational to want it to be the case that God exists), whereas the second project explores arguments for personal anti-theism (the view that God’s existence would be a bad thing for a particular person, and as such it is rational for that person to want it to be the case that God does not exist) and for wide anti-theism (the view that God’s existence would be a bad thing for all agents such that it is rational for all agents to want it to be the case that God does not exist).
