CUE Governance Changes

Evolution for A More Focused and Efficient Collaboration

Concordia University of Edmonton’s Board of Governors approved changes to the governance structure of the university as of May 22, 2026. The newly amended bylaws impact the Board of Governors as well as General Faculties Council, and will also impact Faculty Councils.

The Board of Governors will become more streamlined, moving from 22 members to 19 members. It retains its high-level oversight functions and strategic focus with a restructured committee configuration and responsibilities. There is now an allowance for non-Board members with appropriate expertise to serve on Board committees.

The General Faculties Council (GFC) will move from 44 members to 16 members, with a reduced size and more balanced composition calibrated to ensure informed debate and sound decision making. The GFC committee structure has also been significantly altered, with GFC taking a direct role in more aspects of academic decision making.

Faculty Councils are to assume higher levels of autonomy and accountability over a variety of areas directly impacting them and CUE, including but not limited to enrolment, programs of study, research and scholarship, and service.

The benefits of these changes include a more nimble governance system, better understood roles and authorities, and a stronger faculty voice on issues that directly impact them and their students.
