Cybersecurity Awareness Month: CUE events, subject matter experts available for interview and more

EDMONTON, Alberta — Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE), a leader in cybersecurity education since 2005, is heading the conversation about online safety during Cybersecurity Awareness Month, an internationally recognized campaign held every October to inform the public of the importance of cybersecurity. As Canada’s only post-secondary institution with Master’s programs in Information Systems Assurance Management (MISAM) and Information Systems Security Management (MISSM), the university is offering up its experts to members of the media throughout the month for interviews. CUE also offers a Masters of Science in Information Technology degree to round out its cybersecurity offerings,

Subject matter experts available:

Dr. Alison Yacyshyn, Dean of the Mihalcheon (mi-HAL-shin) School of Management

Areas of expertise: The increasing need for cybersecurity experts in private and public sectors, economic outlook for cybersecurity jobs, Concordia University of Edmonton’s internationally regarded Master’s programs in cybersecurity

Dr. Eslam AbdAllah, Chair of MISSM and MISAM programs

Areas of expertise: cryptography (the process of hiding or coding information so that only the person a message was intended for can read it), network security and autonomous vehicles

Dr. Shaun Aghili, Lead Faculty of MISAM program

Areas of expertise: fraud examination and prevention, information systems/data security and assurance, and nternal uditing

Mr. Shawn Thompson, Instructor and Program Liaison

Areas of expertise: national cybersecurity strategies and cybersecurity in small and medium-sized organizations

Throughout Cybersecurity Awareness Month, CUE experts will be sharing tips on social media @CUEdmonton to educate Albertans about the hidden dangers of sharing information on the internet. Students from CUE’s International Information System Security Certification Consortium (ISC2) club will also be sharing weekly tips on their Instagram account. CUE’s website at concordia.ab.ca will also feature timely articles about cybersecurity throughout the month.

CUE will also be hosting a series of public events where attendees can learn how to protect themselves against cyber threats. Members of the public, including members of the media, are invited to attend.
