Concordia’s Thunder Athletics student athletes give back to the community in a big way this holiday season

EDMONTON, Alberta —Concordia University of Edmonton’s Thunder Athletics wrap up their 12 Days of Giving on Saturday, ending another season of service to Edmonton and area organizations.

The 12 Days of Giving is an initiative started four years ago to give student athletes the opportunity to give back to the community during the holiday season.

“A big part of Concordia’s mission statement is to create ethical leaders and citizens for the common good. With our Thunder athletes, we try to instill in them that character is as important as our athletic and academic endeavors. Volunteering our time to these important causes is one way we can give to the community that supports us, during the holidays,” said Nathaniel MacLellan, Director of Athletics & Recreation.

This year, student athletes gave time to the following organizations: 630 Ched Santa’s Anonymous, Help Portrait at the Edmonton Public Library, Canadian Blood Services (2x), Mustard Seed,  St. Cecilia Junior High/ providing clothes to the “Cecilia Closet”, McCauley Seniors Lodge, Edmonton Food Bank (3x) and the Kids with Cancer Society.

This year’s 12 Days of Giving campaign yielded:

  • 250 volunteer hours
  • 95 student athletes and coaches participated
  • 11 litres of blood donated
