Learners’ Perceptions about Task-based Language Teaching

Despite the widespread acceptance of task-based language teaching (TBLT) in the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA), very few studies have investigated the implementation of TBLT, particularly from the learners’ perspective. Learners’ perceptions about language learning act as a powerful motivating factor that shapes the actions and behaviours that they display in their learning. In addition, perceptions can be a useful source of information for program evaluation purposes. In this study, I explore Spanish L2 learners’ perceptions about TBLT by means of questionnaires, journals and focus groups. These data show an overall positive perception of TBLT and of specific aspects of this approach, as well as frustration with and resistance to other aspects. Implications for the implementation of TBLT in university contexts will be discussed.
