Indoor Track Records Fall as Thunder Men Mix it up with CIS Runners
Posted on: Jan 25, 2016A few of the Thunder Indoor Track men took part in the 2016 Golden Bear Open on the weekend which saw several Indoor Track school records fall. Kirk Sundt started the weekend off on Friday night with a school record and personal best in the 3000m, finishing in 10th place and taking 9 seconds off his former school record. "Kirk ran a perfect race with a big last kilometer," said Head Coach Matt Norminton. Men's team Captain Ben Thomas competed in the 600m on Saturday morning, running a solid 1:28 time in his first attempt at the distance this year. Rookies Avian Prince and Andrew Sanchez-Orosz competed in the 300m. Both ran well and posted Top 10 times for the distance. In the men's 1500m, Kirk Sundt ran another outstanding race to finish in 7th overall and set another school record, dropping 1 second off his previous record. Not to be outdone, 5th year runner Kenton Sportak set the school 1000m record, dropping almost 5 seconds from the previous record and finishing in 2nd place overall. "That was a very physical race. Kenton raced well and managed to finish strong which was awesome. There was a lot of jostling out there," stated Norminton. Thomas, Sundt and Sportak were joined by 2nd year runner Michael Quick to compete in the 4x400m relay. The men ran well against some of the top CIS teams, finishing in 7th place overall in another school record.
Half of the team will next compete at the KofC Games in Saskatoon next weekend.
