Unfortunately there was a vehicle on campus that had a catalytic converter stolen last week. This crime happens very quickly and there are some measures that can make it harder for a thief to remove or identifiable if they are caught with them.  This may be the difference between them attempting to steal a converter or moving on to an easier vehicle. The Edmonton Police Service offers these suggestions. 

• When possible, avoid parking your vehicle in a place where thieves can discreetly crawl underneath and remove the converter. An experienced thief can cut off and steal a converter in under two minutes.
• Engrave the converter with your VIN # (vehicle identification number) so it’s easier to identify as stolen property. Include this information in your police report.
• Have the converter welded to your vehicle making it difficult to remove.
• Invest in a clamp or cage that will make removal far more difficult, discouraging a thief.
• Purchase a vehicle alarm that is sensitive to the vibration of a catalytic converter being sawed off.

If you are a victim of CC theft, avoid the temptation just to drive your ride home or to the nearest repair centre. Without the converter in place, the rest of the exhaust system may not be secure, and you run the risk of doing more damage if a loose exhaust pipe digs into the road. Your best bet is to call your roadside assistance provider. (Driving.ca)
