Thunder 2012 Flashback

Posted on: Dec 19, 2012

This past semester there was an uptick in the level of enthusiasm and support for Thunder Athletics. The enthusiasm around campus served to motivate our athletes to perform at their highest levels. Ten out of the 11 Thunder Athletics teams kicked off their 2012-13 ACAC season with impressive results.

Men’s Hockey

Now in the second year of their ‘rebirth’, the Men’s Hockey team has a great mix of new and returning players with a trio of 5th year forwards – Dustin Claffey, Andre Herman and Ian Hall – leading the scoring charge. Head Coach Dan Peacocke is optimistic about the team’s fortunes in the Winter semester as they wrapped up the Fall campaign just 2 points out of 4th place.

Vollyball

Concordia’s Women’s Volleyball team is now in their 3rd year of ACAC competition. Under new Head Coach Sherri Milne, seven talented rookies, including American import, Sarah Schwanz, look to help boost the ranks of third year veterans Bailey Magas and Kiara Kleckne in the New Year. The young line up struggled to find the win column in the Fall, but are starting to gel and are looking forward to the Winter semester competition.

The Men’s squad – under second year Head Coach Joel Mrak – added eight new athletes to this year’s roster.  With those talented rookies in tow, veterans Chad Hinchey, Curtis Lucki and Andrew Odegard led the team to their first ever ACAC match victory on October 27th.

Basketball

The Men’s Basketball program has new leadership under Head Coach Reagan Wood.  With former U of A Golden Bear Jamaal Bucknor returning to the fold, the Thunder have had plenty of offensive firepower to complement 5th year Centre Milos Prijovic and newcomer Ethan Dixon. The team is currently sitting in the top spot in the ACAC North division.

In her sophomore campaign as Head Coach for women’s basketball, Ashley MacSporran led her team to a 5-4 record in the Fall semester. Anchored by veterans Steph Balog and Kaylie Mattiussi and with a solid supporting cast, the team is well positioned to take a run at the top of the ACAC North.

Soccer

With Head Coach Sasha Samadi masterful recruiting skills, the Men’s Soccer team secured a berth in the playoffs, Veteran Ryan Presley returned to the fold this season and was nicely complemented by the scoring touch of rookie Roba Yokde.

Under the inspirational guidance of ACAC and CCAA Coach of the Year Dean Cordeiro, the Thunder Women’s Soccer team won ACAC Silver and as a Wildcard contender, went on to the CCAA National Championships in Charlottetown, PEI. Six rookie starters – led by 4th year scoring phenom Lindsay Butler and veteran Goalkeeper Trish Arends – advanced to the Gold Medal game before being edged out and taking National Silver!

Cross Country

Another high point of the semester came from the Cross Country Running program. XC Running Coach Matt Norminton has continued his astounding job of building up the program and took 7 men and 4 women to the ACAC Championships where 2nd year runner Marriya Jenkins took the Gold Medal!  Marriya went on to the CCAA National Championships in Quebec where she won the Women’s National Silver Medal!

Golf

Led by Coach Kevin MacAlpine, the Thunder Golf program fielded two players this season with rookie Christian Frialde joining 2nd year team mate Carly Curran at the ACAC Championships.

Congratulations to all our athletes in 2012 and good luck in 2013!
