Drama Department Hosts Playwriting Boot Camp

Concordia's Drama Department and the GTC (Green Thespian Collective (drama club)) are sponsoring a playwriting workshop this weekend with award winning writer, director and actor Mieko Ouchi.
The Playwriting Boot Camp runs on Saturday, February 4 2:00 to 4:30 in the Tegler Auditorium at Concordia University College.
The workshop is free to GTC members and $5.00 for non GTC Members.
This Practical Playwriting Boot Camp will give participants an introduction to playwriting, creating dialogue and telling stories in a dramatic form. The workshop is designed for anyone, no experience is required just a willingness to try your hand at playwriting.
Mieko Ouchi Bio
Mieko Ouchi works as an actor, writer and director in theatre, film and TV and is based out of Edmonton.
Her first full-length play, The Red Priest (Eight Ways To Say Goodbye) has been produced at Alberta Theatre Projects, Workshop West Theatre, the Globe Theatre, the Tarragon and the Thousand Islands Playhouse. In 2004 the play was a finalist for the Governor General's Award for Drama, winning the Canadian Authors Association's Carol Bolt Prize in 2005. It has been translated into Japanese by Toyoshi Yoshihara. Her second play, The Blue Light, has been produced at Alberta Theatre Projects (Betty Mitchell Award – Outstanding New Play), Workshop West Theatre, Firehall Theatre Centre in Vancouver, Keyano Theatre in Fort McMurray and at DMV Productions in Halifax. It has been translated into French, Japanese, Russian and Czech and was read in 2006 in Moscow at the Chekhov International Theatre Festival, and was nominated for both The City of Edmonton Book Prize and the Gwen Pharis Ringwood Award for Drama from the Writers Guild of Alberta in 2007. The Dada Play was a commission from Red Deer College Theatre Department and has enjoyed additional productions at St. Mary's University College in Calgary and the School of Drama at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma where she was the inaugural Faith Broome Playwright in Residence in 2009. The Midnapore Cycle, a site specific play premiered at St. Mary's University College in 2009. Her newest play Nisei Blue premiered at ATP's Enbridge playRites Festival in 2011(Betty Mitchell Award – Outstanding New Play). It will be published by Playwrights Canada Press and translated into Japanese by Toyoshi Yoshihara in 2012.
Mieko's award-winning films Shepherd's Pie and Sushi, By This Parting, Samurai Swing and Minor Keys have played over 30 festivals internationally and aired on CBC, Bravo! and the W Network.
Mieko is a co-founder and a current Artistic Co-Director of Concrete Theatre and the President of the board of Playwrights Canada Press Ltd.
