Thunder Women’s Basketball Taste First Preseason Action

Posted on: Sep 23, 2013

The 2013-14 version of the Concordia Thunder Women's Basketball team got their first taste of competition this past weekend in a preseason tourney hosted by Kings.  Game one on Friday afternoon saw the Thunder jump off against the CIS-bound MacEwan Griffins.  Under the watchful eye of new Head Coach Robbie Valpreda and with multiple rookies in the lineup, the Thunder took to the floor in their first action as a team.  The Thunder came out a bit slow in the first few minutes and quickly found themselves down 13-2. However they showed a lot of early season grit and fought back in the 2nd frame, trailing by just 5 points at the half (32-27).  The second half of the contest saw the more experienced Griffins steadily pull ahead and although they continued to battle right to the final buzzer, the Thunder finished the match on the short end of a 70-49 final score.
On Saturday, the Thunder – facing the host King's Eagles – were determined to bounce back after their loss from the day before. Right out of the gate, the ladies were flying down the court scoring in transition and playing tenacious defense. The effort produced dividends and the Thunder went into the half up 10pts, 31-21. In the second half, The Thunder picked up right where they had left off with the defense setting the tone, led by veteran Railene Hooper's 14 rebounds. The Thunder encountered a little bit of adversity when Kings made a run to cut the lead down to 8pts. However, the leadership of the veterans and the patience of the rookies kept Kings at bay with the final score 65-46 in favour off the 'Lady Thunder'. Scoring leaders on the day were Aly Bridgeman, Railene Hooper and Meagan McIntosh with 14pts apiece.
The Thunder will be back in action on September 28th as they play their Alumni @ 6pm at the Ralph King Athletic Centre.
