Warm Welcomes and New Beginnings: CUE and the HMCS NONSUCH Host a Canadian Citizenship Ceremony

On a beautiful Thursday afternoon, the Tegler Student Centre was filled with excitement, pride, and celebration as Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) proudly hosted a Canadian Citizenship Ceremony along with members of the HMCS NONSUCH.

During the ceremony, 67 people from 24 countries stood, spoke the Oath of Citizenship, and became proud new Canadians. Young and old, families and individuals, all celebrated their new citizenship and were welcomed into their communities as Canadians, surrounded by a room full of supporters and family.

“Each of you adds another vibrant thread to the tapestry of Canada,” said MLA Edmonton – Highlands Janice Irwin.

President Loreman commended all of the new Canadians for their “sacrifice, determination, and faith in the future,” recognizing the challenges and struggles each of them likely faced leaving their home countries behind to build a new life here in Canada.

The ceremony was led by a stage party representing the university, the military, the government, and the Indigenous community: CUE President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Tim Loreman, Dean of Education and Commanding Officer of the HMCS NONSUCH Dr. Tim Cusack, MLA for Edmonton – Highlands Janice Irwin, Citizenship Judge, The Honourable James Clover, and Indigenous Cultural Advisor Arlene Twin.
