Posted on: Apr 22, 2022The Office of Research Services is accepting applications for the SSHRC Explore and Exchange Grants (April 2022) competition until April 30, 2022 at 11:59 pm.
SSHRC Explore and Exchange Grants are intended to strengthen research excellence in the social sciences and humanities.
This funding opportunity is supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), through its SSHRC Institutional Grants (SIG) program, and administered by Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE).
This is expected to be the last competition under the current institutional grant.

For the April 2022 call only:
- SSHRC Explore Grants: $7000 (maximum)
- SSHRC Exchange Grants: $1,500 (maximum)
- Maximum (Combined): $7,000

Deadline for Applications
April 30, 2022 at 11:59 pm. No extensions will be provided.
Effective Dates of the Awards
For this competition:
- Explore Grants are valid until March 31, 2023, with no possibility of extension.
- Exchange Grants are valid until five (5) days after the end of the funded activity, or until March 31, 2023, whichever is the shortest.
SSHRC Explore and Exchange Grants cannot be used to pay for expenses incurred outside of the effective dates of the awards.
Eligibility
SSHRC Explore and Exchange Grants are open to CUE faculty members conducting research in a SSHRC-eligible discipline. The Office of Research Services encourages all eligible candidates to apply.
Applicants can submit a maximum of one application to each stream.
Faculty members holding an active SSHRC Explore or Exchange Grant are ineligible for a grant of the same kind, but are eligible for a grant of the other stream. This includes faculty members who received extensions due to COVID-19 that extend beyond April 1, 2022.
Faculty members may only hold one award per stream in any twelve-month period.

Applications will only be received as a single PDF document via email. The ORS is working under limited service conditions and is unable to assist applicants in formatting applications to meet the guidelines.

Subject Matter Eligibility
Applications must fall within the subject matter eligibility of SSHRC. Briefly:
“Applications to SSHRC as the primary source of research or research training support must meet the following two criteria:
- The proposed research or related activities must be primarily in the social sciences and humanities (i.e., aligned with SSHRC’s legislated mandate).
- The intended outcome of the research must primarily be to add to our understanding and knowledge of individuals, groups, and societies—what we think, how we live, and how we interact with each other and the world around us.“
Review Process
SSHRC Explore and Exchange Grant applications are adjudicated by CUE’s Research and Faculty Development Committee through a merit review process. Information on evaluation criteria and scoring is included in the guidelines (above).
Conceptual or Budgetary Overlap with Existing or Future Applications
Neither SSHRC nor CUE allow duplicate funding requests.
Therefore, applications with significant conceptual and/or budgetary overlap with existing or upcoming awards, internal or external, will not be accepted.
If you have applied for, or are considering applying for additional funds, internal or external, to support the research that you are submitting for consideration for the competition, you are required to disclose it to the Office of Research Services and include this information in the appropriate sections of the application form.
Failure to disclose may result in disciplinary action.
