2022 Student of the Year awarded to Hermella Haile

Posted on: Jun 1, 2022

Join us in congratulating the 2021-22 Student of the Year, Hermella Haile. She received this honour at this year’s Convocation ceremony, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts.

When Hermella saw a need for a safe space for black students and black student allies, she helped to create the Concordia Black Students Association (CBSA) and served as President and the Vice-President of Finance. This vital association helps to empower and promote community interaction among all black students at CUE. The CBSA promoted awareness and cultural enlightenment for all Concordia students, including a regular podcast throughout the academic year.

Hermella believes that having a servant’s heart is not only supporting others through volunteerism, but looking for gaps and creating spaces where service is needed. In her time at CUE, she served as a Student Ambassador and a team member of the Concordia Rotaract Club. Hermella’s deep involvement on campus, along with her positive and welcoming attitude, led her to accept a position as the Welcome Desk Advisor in the Student Success Centre where she was one of the first people to greet students and staff as they arrive on campus.

“I know that Hermella demonstrated care, patience, and compassion in her interactions with all students and thoughtfully referred them to whatever resources or services on campus that they need,” says Navleen Kaur, President of the Concordia Students’ Association. “This is an incredibly important contribution to our campus community.”
