Thunder Men’s Basketball Start 2014 Preseason 2-0

Posted on: Sep 29, 2014

The 2014-15 campaign started off on a good note this past week for the Thunder Men’s Basketball Team taking both games of a home and home set with the Canadian University College Aurora. Tuesday at the Ralph King Athletic Centre, the Thunder would come out strong with a 25-11 lead after 1 quarter.  The Aurora would battle hard in the second, going shot for shot with the Thunder making the half time score 50-35.  The Thunder would dominate the second half and cruise to a 99-62 win. “We saw some positives signs out there today,” stated Head Coach Reagan Wood. “When we executed our game plan things went very well for us.  Seeing 12 guys contribute on the score sheet was nice, too.  Having a balanced attack will serve us well this year.  I know our division is going to be full of good teams and every game will be important as we battle to make the playoffs.”
On Thursday, the Thunder travelled down to Lacombe to face the Aurora again where a similar script would play out.  The Thunder would hold a 47-28 half time lead and pushed it to a 95-59 final score. Artez Scharer led the way for the Thunder with 24 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.  Ryan Coleman registered a solid double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  Nathaniel Wojcicki picked up right where he left off after missing last season with an injury adding 12 points and 7 rebounds.  5th year shooting guard Rob Haack dropped in 10 to help in the win. “We had our ups and downs in this one but ultimately did enough to win,” remarked Coach Wood.  “While the wins are nice this time of year, we are really trying to refine how we are executing and we still have lots of work to do there.  It was good to again see balance in our attack.  If we keep improving our decision making we can have even more success.”
This week the Thunder head to the CanWest/ACAC Showcase at the Saville Centre in Edmonton where they will face 3 opponents, starting with the Briercrest Clippers Thursday night at 6 PM.  Friday the Thunder will take on the Ambrose Lions at 5:30 PM and wrap up the showcase on Saturday against the CMU Blazers from Winnipeg at 12 noon.
