What do you say to a cardboard container with legs? Wok box!  However, the Thunder Women's Soccer team were doing anything but 'wokking' on the pitch this weekend in Fort McMurray.  Composure, perseverance and help off the bench were instrumental for the Thunder in earning a full six points against the much improved Huskies of Keyano College.  In the first game Saturday afternoon, the Thunder carried the run of play for the duration of the game, but were unable to solve the 5’8” Husky Keeper. On occasion when she did get beat, her best friend – the crossbar – kept the Thunder ladies off the scoresheet.  Led by Concordia’s Player of the Game, Kaitlyn Diduck – and substitutes made in the second half – the Thunder maintained their level of play and near the 75 minute mark of the game, rookie Hayat Abubaker came in fresh off the bench and pounced on a loose ball in the attacking zone to score the lone goal of the game.  A desperate surge of attack by the Huskies up to the final whistle was diffused by the compactness and composure of Concordia’s defensive play.
On Sunday afternoon the Thunder women secured the final three points with their 3-1 win over the Huskies. Keyano's back-to-back Player of the Game was instrumental in keeping the Thunder off the board in the first half and an early goal by the Huskies had the Concordia women on their heels. In the second half, the Thunder settled into the game and after a missed breakaway opportunity, Jaida Stasiuk caught the rebound from Shyanne Walton to even the score.  Minutes later, Stasiuk followed up with a top shelf finish.  Coming late into the game, Melissa Gravel secured the win with a left-footed strike from outside the 18.
The Thunder will now enjoy a rare bye week before getting back into action against the Augustana Vikings on October 3rd and 4th.  The home event will go on the 4th with a noon time start.
