Thunder Curling Teams Compete at First Regional of the Season
Posted on: Jan 19, 2015With the Fall Regional having been postponed due to bad weather, the ACAC Curling season finally got underway for your Thunder Curling teams at the Avonair Curling Club here in Edmonton this past weekend. Concordia is represented this year by two teams. The Ladies team consists of Skip Willow Frissell, 3rd Adrienne Maschmeyer, 2nd Regan Hominiuk and Lead Jennifer Martinoski. The Mixed team is led by new Skip Konnor Wood, 3rd Brooke Gelasco, 2nd Kyler Loomis and Lead Melissa Palsitt. Both teams were very ably supported by spare Megan Wruk, who was able to fill in for 4 games through the weekend.
It was a tough weekend for both teams as each were playing their 1st competitive games together this year. The ladies gave all of their competition good strong games, but were able to only come away with just 1 win in 6 games. Every game but one was very close, with the ladies showing a great competitive spirit and never giving up.
The Thunder Mixed team started out slowly, showing their inexperience in losing games in 6 ends in their 1st three games. As the weekend progressed, 1st time skip Wood began to feel more comfortable with his teammates and with the ice conditions and the last 3 games of the week were much better for the whole team. Konnor was able to beat Red Deer in the morning game on Sunday and just rubbed a guard on his last rock of the final game of the weekend, allowing Lakeland to win by a 7-5 score. This left the Mixed squad with an identical 1 win, 5 loss record for the regional.
Both teams showed a marked improvement over the weekend and Coach Rick Mann is looking forward to a much improved result at the next regional play down February 6-8 in Camrose.
