The Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) community expresses their collective pride and gratitude in having Stephen Mandel, former Mayor of Edmonton and Alberta cabinet minister, serve as the Chancellor of our university.
Chancellor Mandel’s leadership and dedication to public service has been invaluable to Alberta, and he continued that legacy at CUE by helping to set a strong foundation for the future growth and success of our university. As Chancellor, he upheld the mission and vision of our institution and modeled good citizenship for our students, faculty, and staff.
“Having worked closely with Chancellor Mandel, I will miss his friendship, wisdom, and tenacity,” said Dr. Tim Loreman, President and Vice-Chancellor. “He helped to guide us through some character-defining moments such as the pandemic and a labour dispute. He has left an indelible mark on Concordia University of Edmonton. He will forever be an important part of our CUE community.”
Chancellor Mandel is a visionary, and during his tenure at CUE we strengthened our academic offerings, grew our Centre for Innovation and Applied Research, advanced and expanded our research portfolio, and embarked on the largest campus expansion in our history. The Chancellor’s financial contributions, energy, and guidance helped the university to carry out its ambitious goals.
During Chancellor Mandel’s tenure we faced unprecedented challenges due to the pandemic which had an impact on every part of our operations, and impacted students, faculty, and staff. With Chancellor Mandel’s optimism and strong leadership, we switched to online learning for a year and then transitioned back to in-person classes in 2022. His encouragement helped CUE bear through the storm and come out the other side stronger, against the odds.
We are thankful for Chancellor Mandel’s spirit of collaboration towards improving the university, so it can be a place to serve students from all backgrounds to become leaders of the future. The legacy of Stephen’s contributions will be felt for years to come.
“On behalf of the entire CUE community, we thank Chancellor Mandel for his leadership, wisdom, and guidance. In addition, his contributions have helped fund crucial initiatives that have enhanced the student experience and positioned the university as a leader in higher education.” says Dr. John Acheson, Chair, Board of Governors, CUE.
