Admission Requirements
Concordia’s Bachelor of Education (After Degree) is an innovative program designed to prepare teachers for a challenging and rewarding career in Alberta’s elementary schools.
The Bachelor of Education (After Degree) is a two-year elementary generalist program leading to a degree that fulfills the requirements for certification as a teacher in Alberta. The program is recognized by the Alberta Teachers’ Association. Students are mentored by faculty and staff members, as well as by accomplished teachers in the field. Space is limited, and therefore students are encouraged to apply early.

Students applying to Bachelor of Education (After Degree) must meet:
- the Admission requirements to the program as outlined in section 3.4.1.A., and
- satisfy all admission deadlines as outlined here: Deadlines
At the time of application it is strongly encouraged that the following items are included with your submission through *ApplyAlberta:
- Philosophy of Teaching Statement
- A Volunteer/Work Experience Record.
- Contact information for two referees.
*ApplyAlberta requires the submission of uploaded documentation to complete the application process. Applications will not be assessed until the receipt of all required documentation.

Once you apply, your application will be assessed by an Admissions Advisor. You will receive an email with further instructions on the documents required to assess your application, including the confidential assessments forms for your referees.
Transcripts
Interim transcripts and a graduation status letter will be accepted for assessment however final decisions will not be made until official final transcripts are received.
Please note that Graduation Status Letters are requested through the Office of the Registrar of the university you intend to graduate from.
Once your application has been assessed, if you meet the minimum admission requirements as outlined in the academic calendar, and we are in receipt of required documents, your application will be forwarded to the Faculty of Education for review. If your application is competitive you will be invited for an interview.
Successful applicants will receive an email with information about confirming their spot by paying the registration deposit.
Concordia University of Edmonton creates profiles for all applicants using:
- AGPA;
- prerequisite course requirements;
- Philosophy of Teaching Statement;
- Volunteer/Work Experience Record;
- two Confidential Assessment Forms;
- computer proficiency; and
- the interview*
The first step in the selection process is to assess the completed application.
*Applicants who meet the competitive criteria will receive invitations for an interview. Conditional Admission may be granted following the interviews.
Philosophy of Teaching Statement:
A teaching philosophy statement is a written description of your values, goals, and beliefs regarding both teaching and learning. It should be a general expression of your beliefs about children and the framework that will guide your own teaching practice
The typical format spans two pages and ranges from 600 to 800 words.
Confidential Assessment Forms:
At least one referee should be a former employer or supervisor who can comment on the applicant’s suitability to work with children between the ages of 5 and 14 years.
Applicants will receive the form once they submit their application.
Volunteer/Work Experience Record
This should encompass the position held, weekly hours, duration of service, supervisor contact details, and a summary of responsibilities.
Evidence of proficiency in computer knowledge and use:
Candidates will be requested to provide a written response, prior to the interview.
Interview:
The interview is designed to assess applicants’ non-academic qualifications, such as their degree of maturity, motivation for applying, initiative, ability to communicate, personal qualities and interests, and overall suitability for the teaching profession.
Be ready to discuss your reasons for applying to the Education program, your interest in working with children and youth, and your classroom experience as well as respond to scenarios that might present in a school setting.
