The 2019 Concordia Symphony Concerto Competition for Youth 

Competition Guidelines

I. Eligibility

The Concordia Symphony Concerto Competition for Youth is open to Alberta residents who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, aged 25 years old or younger on September 09, 2019, i.e.the applicant must be born on or after September 09, 1993.

II. The Application Process

All applications must be submitted online. Registration will open on September 18, 2019.

There will be a non-refundable registration fee of $50.00. Incomplete applications will not be accepted at a later time.

Note: Proof of citizenship or permanent resident status will be required.

Deadline for application: November 06, 2019 at 10:00 PM. The registration page will be closed after this date.

III. The Competition

There will be two categories in this competition:

     Junior youth category: under 14 years of age

     Senior youth category: 14 to 25 years of age

There will be two rounds in the Competition:

     Elimination Round: video screen (pre-selection)

     Final Round: live auditions

The Elimination Round:

Applicants for the competition should upload their audition videos onto the CSO’s private Google Drive no later than November 06, 2019 at 10:00 PM.

REPERTOIRE GUIDELINES FOR THE AUDITIONS

Elimination Round:

Applicants must perform Étude and one solo piece (in full or selected movements) of their choice of substantial nature to represent their current level of performance. The preliminary audition pieces together must be no longer than 20 minutes long. The selection may be played with or without accompaniment.

Announcement of finalists: November 20, 2019

Final Round:

Finalists must perform a full concerto with an accompanist. Three to eight selected finalists will be invited to perform on Saturday, December 07, 2019.

Venue: Concordia University of Edmonton campus

Note: the adjudicators have the discretionary authority to stop the performance during the final round. Repertoire for the final audition should be chosen form the following list of concerti:

Beethoven Piano Concerto no. 3, Op. 37
Mozart Piano Concerto no. 21, K. 467
Chopin Piano Concerto no. 2, Op. 21
Grieg Piano Concerto, Op. 16
Prokofiev Piano Concerto no. 1, Op. 10
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto no. 2, Op. 18
Schumann Piano Concerto Op. 54

Note: the winner is expected to perform his/her final repertoire selection in full at the live orchestral concert to be held on March 01, 2020.

Announcement of the winner: December 07, 2019 after the final round.

Note: All applicants should provide a copy of their audition repertoire to the adjudicators.

Note: Adjudicators may ask the applicants to stop and start during the audition.

Note: Memorization is compulsory in the Finals Audition.

IV. The Evaluation

Applicants will be evaluated by a panel of three adjudicators including Concordia Symphony’s Music Director, Dr. Danielle Lisboa.

V. The Prize

The first prize winner will have an opportunity to present a solo work with the orchestra (full work or partial movements) as part of the CSO 20-21 season, and a cash prize in the amount of CAD$1,000.00.

Second and third prize winners will receive a cash prize as follows:

Outstanding Musicianship award: CAD$500.00

Honourable Mention: CAD$300.00

VI. Expenses

All travel and lodging expenses, as well as accompanist’s fees are the competitor’s responsibility.

VII. Cancellation

Should it become necessary for a competitor to cancel, the competitor must notify Concordia Symphony Orchestra to facilitate the organization of the schedule.

VIII. Disqualification

Applicants not complying with these rules will be disqualified. Providing false information in the application will result in the disqualification of the competitor.

IX. Other

Any situation not covered by these rules shall be referred to the School of Music department at Concordia University of Edmonton, whose decision on such matters shall be final.
