Reopening CUE for the 2020-21 Academic Year

Assistant Professor, Environmental, Earth and Atmospheric Science

Category: Faculty

Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) is a community of learning grounded in scholarship and academic freedom, preparing students to be independent thinkers, ethical leaders and citizens for the common good. CUE is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for work, study, and living. We actively promote dignity for all, rejecting action and language that are harmful to mutual respect.

CUE is situated on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton’s historic Highlands neighborhood. Supporting a student body of over 3,000, we are known for our small class sizes and excellence in teaching. These features, and our diverse student population, provide an excellent opportunity for engaging with students in a sustained and nurturing way unique within the Canadian university system. CUE is also an institution that values research in the sciences, social sciences, humanities and management.

CUE’s Faculty of Science is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Professor, Environmental, Earth and Atmospheric Science in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. Concordia’s Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences program offers 3- and 4-year Bachelor of Science degrees, giving students the option to either prepare for a professional career or move forward into professional programs or graduate schools. The Environmental Science program offers multiple concentrations or major options, and minors in environmental science are available to students in other areas of study. The degree programs are designed to give students a broad understanding of the foundational concepts in Environmental Science. Students are exposed to extensive laboratory and field experiences that support and expand upon concepts discussed in lecture while allowing them to gain a variety of practical skills.

This position is available to begin July 1, 2021, or shortly thereafter.

  • PhD in Environmental Science, Earth and Atmospheric Science or a closely related field.
  • Excellence in both research and teaching, or strong potential to develop such excellence.
  • Experience in the area of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is expected.
  • Understanding of applications of GIS/remote sensing and environmental data management and analysis would be an asset.

The normal undergraduate teaching assignment is 9 hours a week in the first year and 12 hours a week for subsequent years. CUE provides opportunities for reductions in teaching to pursue research. In addition, the successful candidate will be committed to growing professional relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the broader community, promoting diversity and inclusion as broadly understood.
