Bad Writing Contest

By Concordia on November 26, 2012 in Student News

Every year the English Department runs a creative writing contest. This year they are doing a version of the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest.

The winner will receive a $50 Amazon gift card. The runner-up will receive a $25 dollar Amazon gift card. All other participants will receive a few good laughs!

Contest Rules

First, come up with the opening sentence of a novel – the worst sentence possible. By ‘worst’ we don't mean bad spelling or grammar. Instead, you should aim for something corny, wacky, lame, melodramatic, and over the top. It's generally a good idea to pick a genre (like western, harlequin romance, science fiction) that you want to parody.

Examples of ‘wonderfully bad’ opening sentences.

Email your entries to Dr. Conrad van Dyk at

As soon as entries come in they will be posted on the English Department’s website where people can comment and tell us which ones they like. Comments may influence the judging committee!

You can submit up to 3 entries. The contest is open to all students, faculty, and staff until December 1st (midnight).
