Thunder Women Head to CCAA Championships

Posted on: Oct 29, 2012

The Concordia Thunder Women’s Soccer team took the Silver Medal at the ACAC Championships on the weekend and will head to PEI to compete for the National title.

Their journey began on Saturday afternoon when they took on the Red Deer Queens in the ACAC Conference Championship semi-final at Jasper Place Bowl in west Edmonton. The game ended with a 4-Nil final score and with the win, the Thunder earned a position at Nationals in PEI as the ACAC was awarded a Wild Card berth this season and will be sending both the Gold and Silver Medal winners to Charlottetown.

Sunday’s game brought great expectations as Concordia battled NAIT for the ACAC Conference Championship. Ranked #1 and #3 in the country, respectively, the teams faced off in what turned into the first blizzard of the year. Even with an amazing turnout of fans cheering them on, the Thunder were unable to gain their footing and allowed two weak goals on corner kicks. They looked as though they might push NAIT late in the game when forward Lindsay Butler was finally able to put one past the NAIT Keeper, but it wasn’t to be as NAIT were given a penalty kick and went up 3-1. The game ended with NAIT as the Conference Champions and Concordia taking home the Silver.

The Thunder will now have an intense week of preparation before making the trip to Holland College in Charlottetown for the CCAA National Championships which will be held from November 6th to 10th.
